Overall I see this Barcamp as a success and thank all participants who took part. A special thanks to everybody who helped out during / before and after the two days, your offering to help was very much appreciated. We had around 800 unique visitors, some Saturday, some Sunday and most of you came both days. At the end we had 102 sessions and only one spot in Sunday morning’s sessions was left empty. That is really impressive. Also the visitors from Kirgistan and Australia did make my day. It was great to see you guys.

I am very happy with the atmosphere throughout the whole Barcamp and I heard that a lot of networking took place. Also, with the exception of the Ad-hoc network, internet connectivity was always good. ;-)

Ok, we were a little bit too optimistic with the acoustic in our “Open Space”, trying to have the speaker speak in different directions wasn´t enough to divide the talks. That was a learning for us although I personally still find this concept very promising. Mea culpa.
I hope our little modification on Sunday did help a little.

There is only one thing that leaves me wondering. A lot of Blog-Posts cover the topic of low session quality and annoying sales pitches. The conclusion, that the basic rules of Barcamp are not used anymore is near with hearing this.

First of all: YOU ARE BARCAMP! That means that all of you take part in making Barcamps a success. And hearing about bad session quality gives me the burning question, why no one else is holding better sessions or helping the respective speaker if possible. If there is a sesssion you do not like, do walk out of it, but make sure to give constructive feedback to the person holding it - how else are they suppose to understand and improve? I also know some experts in certain topics not holding a session this time, but lament on poor session quality. YOU ARE BARCAMP!

Another thing I hear very often lately is “Quality Sunday”. This means that some campers see the sessions on Saturday as superficial and do only want to hold sessions on Sunday. Great thing! Just leave Saturday to all the “others”, not so high quality sessions… what a nice move.

I´m not able to follow. For me you are just wasting one complete day! A day made possible by a lot of people and sponsors. You also have an emphasis on different classes of campers, putting a block on the equal sharing, which is the base of this unconference form. THIS IS NOT BARCAMP!

Last thing I´d like to feature is the sales pitches. I heard some complains this year and I´m still wondering, why nobody addresses this within the respective sessions. If you´re not able to give feedback or use your feet to leave the session room than you will be ignored. It´s a pity to see this unfiltered consumption taking place.

You need to remember that you all are Barcamp. The organizers just provide the necessary framework, organize a location, drinks and food if there are enough sponsors. But even with that covered, at the end of the day it is still just the framework to allow every participant to make this his or her own event, contribute and be active. Meaning each and every one of us is responsible for success or failure. This means active participation, which I missed at some Barcamps lately…

Please don´t see this post as an affront to anyone. It´s just that these question keep wandering in my mind and I think that they need to be addressed. For the good of future Barcamp I´d like to see this topics discussed a lot and I´m looking forward to your comments.

Actually all T-Shirts were gone saturday evening….

As we want to give everyone at least the posibility to have a shirt as a souvenir we asked the guys from ABT for help. They have the same view and therefore offer our T-Shirt for a limited time in their shop. We don´t have the budget to sponsor it anymore, but i think the price of 12 Euro is abolutely fair.

Teil 3: Mein erstes BarCamp - Kann man nicht drüber meckern

Das war es also schon, mein erstes BarCamp. Schön war es! Ich will es mal kurz machen mit meinem Gesamteindruck, denn ich bin ziemlich müde und will eigentlich noch ein bisschen chatten und so Zeug. Also: Die Stimmung insgesamt empfand ich als angenehm relaxt, wenn auch am ersten Tag eine sehr viel aufgeregtere Atmosphäre herrschte, als am zweiten Tag. Aber man hatte nie den Eindruck, dass das Orga-Team intern genervt gewesen wäre, oder dass es Ärger mit dem Gastgeber der Räumlichkeiten gegeben hat. Ein sicheres Zeichen von verdammt guter Organisation, und dass soll schon was heissen bei einer derart großen Veranstaltung.

Der BarCamper an sich ist tendenziell unrasierter Individualist im Alter zwischen 15 und 65 mit webzweinulligem Motivdruck-T-Shirt und Dunkelrand-Brille. Die BarCamperin trägt Pixelroboterkniestrümpfe. Wenn ich mir die Bilder hier und/oder hier so ansehe, fällt doch wirklich auf, wie angenehm nerdig die Atmosphäre war. Im kreativ-produktiven Sinne, meine ich jetzt. Ich hatte eigentlich mehr auch so Rosa-Hemden-Träger vermutet, von denen war aber nur einer da.

Nett die Mischung der Teilnehmer - immer mal wieder internationale Sprachfetzen und viele, die extra aus ganz Deutschland angereist sind. Macht man ja nicht alle Tage, nur mal so aus Quatsch nach Berlin fahren. Die Sessions: Nun, da hab ich vielleicht ein bisschen mehr erwartet, oder ich war einfach in Sessions drin, die mir vom Titel von vornerein schon was gesagt haben. Eher ein Fehler, sollte man nicht machen, lieber mal was anschauen, was einem nichts sagt. Aber gut, Leute pushten ihre Projekte oder stellten Themenbereiche vor, in denen Methoden der Web2.0-Kommunikation und Interaktion vorhandene kulturelle Bedingungen verändert. Schon spannend, im Kern aber eigentlich immer wieder das gleiche Problem: Die Veränderung einer stark hierarchisierten Kommunikation von oben nach unten hin zu einer seitlichen, oder kreisförmigen Kommunikation auf selber Ebene, wodurch alte Strukturen von Macht, Informationshoheit, Kunst, Bildung, Marketing, etc. sich langsam aufweichen. Web2.0 eben.

Eine neue Entdeckung habe ich gemacht: qiken ist schwerer, als es aussieht. Ich glaube, es waren fünf Nokia N96 Demogeräte, die an BarCamper ausgegeben wurden, ausgestattet mit einer Datenflatrate, um live vom Handy Videos vom BarCamp zu streamen (und natürlich, um zu demonstrieren, wie Klasse das N96 ist). Eins habe ich für die Zeit des Barcamps abbekommen und das ist dabei raus gekommen. Kann man nicht meckern, find ich.

Zum Schluss der ganzen Sache habe ich aus einem unachtsamen Versehen der Veranstalter in der Verlosungsaktion noch einen von zwei heissbegehrten BarCamp-Sitzsäcke gewonnen. Den kann ich sehr gut gebrauchen!

It has an really huge socialising space, very nice conference rooms - the WLAN works quite well and the overall atmosphere is exactly how it’s need to be after a long night in Berlin: smooth and relaxed.

The session offerings are manifoldy and it’s good to see, that the “all time favourites” don’t dominate the session board and that even if you are familiar with many social media related topics, you still find something interesting and new.

I will now join some of those sessions and will try to do a few interviews as well ;) So more impressions coming soon.

Teil 2: Mein erstes BarCamp - Be prepared or be squared

Während das BarCamp Berlin Orga-Team gerade Badges ausdruckt, Buttons herstellt und am Veranstaltungsort auf Mega-Bildschrirmen “Pong” gespielt wird, möchte ich die Wartezeit bis zur Welcome Party heute abend sinnvoll nutzen und mich vorbereiten auf mein erstes BarCamp. Seit ich vorgestern Nacht ins Wiki mit den Sessionvorschlägen geschaut habe, hat sich inzwischen schon wieder einiges getan. Dort tragen die Teilnehmer ihre Sessions und ein erstes Bild der Themenvielfalt zeichnet sich ab. Falls du also noch nicht den Themenladen reingeschaut hast, dann aber jetzt zack, zack - zwei Huhn, ein Gänse!

Ich bin gespannt, wie sich das alles gestalten wird. Denn - gelernt ist gelernt - BarCamps organiseren sich selber und verlangen von den Teilnehmern ein extrem hohes Maß an Eigenaktivität. Das eigentliche Programm wird erst Samstag Morgen um 9:45 Uhr auf die Beine gestellt. Doch wer seid ihr alle eigentlich? Aus Spaß habe ich neulich Nacht mal ein paar Leute angeschrieben und nach ihren Motiven befragt, warum sie zum BarCamp Berlin kommen. Ganz oben steht natürlich der Austausch und der Wissenstransfer.

So schreibt mir Ruth Betz von scoyo.de: ” Ein BarCamp erfordert ein Höchstmaß an Aktivitäten auf Seiten der Teilnehmer. Wer sind diese aktiven Teilnehmer? Was sind ihre Themen? Was tut sich gerade Neues im Netz? Ich freue mich darauf, viele spannende Leute kennen zu lernen und die neusten Trends für elearning, web2.0, mobile gadgets, mediawikis, social networks und und und aufzuspüren.” Ruth Betz arbeitet bei scoyo in den Bereichen SEM, SEO und Web-Aktivitäten und schlägt eine Session mit dem Titel “Learning 2.0″. Ich möchte wetten, da geht es um die Integration von Strukturen des Web 2.0 in E-Learning-Methoden.

Um Transformation und Integration von Strukturen des Web 2.0 in Theaterproduktionen wird es bei Benedict Roeser von der Theatergruppe Antigone 2.0 gehen. Es ist ebenfalls sein erstes BarCamp und er schlägt eine Session zum Thema Theater und Web2.0 vor. Supersache für mich, komme ich doch ursprünglich von der Theater- Film und Fernsehwissenschaft und interessiere mich ebenfalls für die Möglichkeiten des Web2.0 für kulturelle Projekte. Das spannende an dem Thema wird die Frage nach der Transformation und Integration von Strukturen des Web2.0 in Theaterproduktionen sein. Benedict schreibt mir auf meine Frage nach seiner Motivation: “Ich bin “Erstling” beim BarCamp und hoffe hauptsächlich auf viele interessante Kontakte. Ich bin Student, arbeite allerdings als freier Regisseur mit einer Theatergruppe. Wir versuchen ein “Theater 2.0″ zu entwickeln, dass in die Richtung geht, die z. B. auch die Gruppe God’s Entertainment einschlägt. Der Kontakt zu anderen Web 2.0 Interessierten ist sowohl für meine Arbeit wichtig, als auch persönlich interessant.”

Klar. Mich als Kultur- und Medienwissenschaftler interessieren natürlich zunächst Themen, die sich darum drehen, wie die neue Kulturtechnik “Internet” sich mit bestehenden Kulturformen verbinden lässt. Aber es wird sicher auch viel Technisches geben. Ebenfalls für mich nicht uninteressant, die Session von Dirk Röhrborn in dem es um firmeninternes Microblogging gehen wird: erste Erfahrungen, Bedürfnisse und mit welchen Tools wäre ein twittern unter Arbeitskollegen möglich. Habe wir im Büro gerade erst neulich drüber diskutiert. Und ich war ja der Meinung, wir sollten erstmal sowas wie ein Wiki vernünftig nutzen. Da wird mir dann Martin Koser mit seiner Session zu Wikis in Firmen und Projekten gute Argumentationshilfen und Tipps geben können. Er freut sich beim BarCamp auf freundliche und neugierige Menschen, fachlichen Austausch, einfach eine gute Zeit!. Sein erstes BarCamp war in München im Herbst 2007: “Ich war “blown away” - von der Vielfalt der Themen, der Leute - mehr aber noch wie das BarCamp Format “alle machen mit” funktioniert hat.

Ich freu mich so! Es wird um Musik im Internet gehen, um Suchmaschinenoptimierung, um Ästhetik, um Recht & Politik im Netz, um Nerd-Culture im Unternehmen, um Web2.0-Software und Applikationen, und und und. Kurz: ums Dings und Bums rund ums Rums :-) Und das alles aus sich selbst heraus organisiert und motiviert. Und wo wir gerade beim Thema Eigenaktivität und Motivation sind: Klasse sind auch diese Leute aus Zentralasien, die total begeistert sind vom BarCamp und extra deswegen nach Berlin kommen wollen. Ich weiss ja nicht viel, aber ich denke, dass wird ein sehr, sehr interessantes Wochenende.

Diesen Freitag, also am 17. Oktober und somit direkt vor der Welcome Party des BarCamps, findet in der Berliner Homebase die Vorbereitung zur DNAdigital statt. Von 10 bis schätzungsweise 18 Uhr werden in der Location am Potsdamer Platz bis zu 120 Digital Natives Themen für den DNAdigital OpenSpace diskutieren.

Nettes Schmankerl: Besucher dieser Veranstaltung erhalten zudem einen Fahrtkostenzuschuss aus einem Topf von derzeit insgesamt 4.000€.

In der Homebase werden am Freitag Digital Natives zusammenkommen und über ihre Fragestellungen und Standpunkte gegenüber den Unternehmensvertretern am 03.11. debattieren. Dies soll in selbst organisierten Kleingruppen im Veranstaltungsformat eines OpenSpaces geschehen. Hauptunterschied zu einem “herkömmlichen” BarCamp: nicht einzelne Sessions mit einem/mehreren Vortragenden und evtl Diskussion im Sessionanschluss, sondern direkte “Diskussion” und “Selbstorganisation” der Kleingruppen. Jeder kann bei den Themen teilnehmen, die ihn am meisten interessieren und diese auch während der Veranstaltung wechseln. Am Ende werden die jeweiligen Ergebnisse präsentiert und dann als Ausgangsbasis für den 03.11. genutzt.

Es geht also darum, einen grundsätzlichen Standpunkt der Digital Natives zu finden und ihre Fragen und Forderungen an die Arbeitswelt/Arbeitgeber von morgen zu formulieren.

Wer also in der Stadt ist und bei der Gestaltung der Wirtschaft von morgen mitreden will, sollte da sein!

Teil 1: Mein erstes Barcamp - Das ist was zum Knutschen

Soll ich Euch mal ein Geheimnis verraten? Auch wenn es vielleicht gerade niemanden wirklich interessiert: Ich bin Jungfrau. Das BarCamp Berlin 3 wird mein erstes BarCamp werden. Und ich bin schon ziemlich aufgeregt. Obwohl, wenn man es sich recht überlegt - gerade in Zeiten, in denen alles im Umbruch ist, das Private und das Öffentliche sich im Internet vermischen und eine gepflegte Internetexistenz alle (aber auch wirklich alle) Qualitäten einer Realexistenz ersetzten kann - sollte man das so eigentlich nicht mehr sagen, denn es ist heutzutage nie mehr etwas das erste Mal. Eigentlich kenne ich das ja alles schon: Von BarCamps habe ich mal was im Internet drüber gelesen, das klang irgendwie interessant, da haben auch sehr viele drüber gebloggt, aber deswegen nimmt man ja nicht gleich an so etwas teil. Jetzt aber schon, weil an dem Wochenende hatte ich noch nicht richtig was vor und das klingt ja auch immer interessant, wenn andere darüber reden. Konkreter formuliert: BarCamp Berlin 3? Ich bin dabei!

Was ist eigentlich ein BarCamp? Alkohol und Liebe!
Das erste Mal kam mir der Begriff im Frühjahr 2007 entgegen gesurft. Da hab ich das aber auch erstmal verwechselt mit dem, was ich vorher schon immer über plogbar wissen wollte, mich aber nie getraut habe, zu fragen. Das Gehirn ist ein sonderbares Organ. Es lässt sich gerne ablenken und clustert sich dann Definitionen Marke Eigenbau zusammen. Monatelang dachte ich also, “BarCamp, ist doch klar, da treffen sich Leute in ‘ner Bar (campen da eventuell, oder so?) und machen irgendwas mit Computern.” Neben dem Lockruf der damit wahrscheinlich konsumierten Alkoholika verband sich mir mit “BarCamp” aber durchaus auch die Kunst der Verführung und der Liebe. Schuld daran ist dieser Song von Datarock über eine Jugendliebe im Zusammenhang mit einem Computercamp in den 1980ern :

So etwas beflügelt natürlich ungemein die Phantasie an. An dieser Stelle vielleicht nur so viel: ich irrte.

Im August 2007 klärte sich die Sache dann auf. Leider, muss ich sagen. Das BarCamp Cologne 2 fand statt und ein total toller Blogger, den ich von Ferne auf der re:publica07 gesehen hatte, twitterte und bloggte über seine Katzencontent-Session auf dem BarCamp Cologne 2. Ich so: “Katzencontent-Session?” Mein Gehirn so: “Ja, ne? Hätte ich jetzt so auch nicht gedacht.” Schnell war er dann gelesen der wunderbare Übersichtsartikel Was ist eigentlich BarCamp? und auch noch mal bei Wikipedia reingelesen. Bei “Bar” geht es wohl tatsächlich eher um eine metasyntaktische Variable, als um eine Futterklappe für Alkoholisches und bei “Camp” zerplatzen alle meine Träume an eine sommerliche Zeltplatzliebe. Hinzu kam die frage, ob sich der Teil mit dem Schlafsackmief in den Veranstaltungsräumen mit meinem damaligem Lebensstandard überhaupt decken ließe? Dann gab es Streams und Podcasts und Geschreibsel von anderen Teilnehmern und Leuten die Leute kannten, die schon mal auf einem BarCamp außerhalb von Europa waren, alles toll! Aber leider nichts für mich. Mich begeisterte die Begeisterung der Teilnehmer und doch wusste ich insgeheim: das ist etwas für eingeschworene Kreise. Mein Gehirn und ich dachten, wir als Kultur- und Medienfuzzis haben auf so einem Internetfuzzi-Event sicher nicht viel verloren. Und doch, als Veranstaltungsformat einer “Un-Konferenz” mit sehr hohem Selbstbeteiligungsfaktor der Teilnehmer blieb mir das Konzept von BarCamp positiv im Kopf. So positiv, dass es nun Zeit ist, da mal selber mitzumachen.

Ob man den ursprünglichen Geist dieser Bewegung auf diesem doch ja nun recht groß geratenen sowie medienwirtschaftspolitisch vernetzen BarCamp Berlin noch finden wird? Na, ich denk mal sicher doch! Die Zelte sind aufgeschlagen, die Regeln studiert. Ich arbeite sogar eine Session aus, die alle Teilnehmer ganz sicher interessieren wird. Und ein magentafarbenen Schlafsack für die Übernachtung am Veranstaltungsort liegt auch bereit. Bleibt nur noch diese dumme Sache mit dem Knutschen. Aber kann ja sein, dass Tara Hunt auftaucht, oder?

Releasing a seat

In order to release a seat, please check out the events listed on our registration page. Turn into each event and choose “I’wont come” from the upper right box named “Attending”. Then your seat will be given to the next person listed on the corresponding waiting list.

Doing this is more than fair and will enable others to visit BarCamp Berlin 3. For some of those it might be the first BarCamp ever. Of course, we do understand that something can happen that keeps you away from attending this BarCamp, but it would be bad if someone else couldn’t make it though she or he is willing to come.

Currently the use of social software, e.g. weblogs, podcasts, wikis, is much discussed in the context of education at schools, universities or companies. At a time of a raising amount of information it seems to be necessary, to be connected with other people and to exchange the knowledge so everyone is up to date and can open up additional knowledge resources which can help to accomplish given challenges.

Continuing the discussion about the education trend the second educamp about “Teaching and Learning 2.0″ is organized on 10th to 12th of October 2008. Everyone who is interested in that education development is sincerely invited to come to the Erwin-Schrödinger-Centre at Humboldt University in Berlin. This building is featured with modern seminar rooms, an audimax and a big lounge area.

Main topics of the coming educamp are “Corporate Learning 2.0″ and “E-learning in universities”. Other planned subjects are, e.g. “E-Portfolios” or “Digital games and virtual worlds” in education. Based on the barcamp-concept, everyone is requested to bring an own issue along, which should be discussed.
